A torn anterior cruciate ligament means healthcare costs. Here you can think about the physical therapy, or a consultation with the orthopedic surgeon, but also consider the additional tests (X-ray or Mri scan) and of course the anterior cruciate ligament surgery. On top of that, there are also several hidden costs. Medical care is expensive and depends in part on the type of insurance. In this blog, we outline the costs to consider.

How expensive is anterior cruciate ligament surgery?

Een torn anterior cruciate ligament is een vervelende knieblessure waar je niet om hebt gevraagd. De gevolgen van deze blessure zijn dat je een periode niet kan sporten, een verminderde maatschappelijke participatie en hoge zorgkosten. Deze kosten komen allemaal bovenop de normale uitgaven. Je zal er achter komen dat, ook in Nederland, een voorste kruisband blessure best duur is.

How physical therapy insurance works

In the Netherlands, insurance is well regulated. There are two pots from which physical therapy can be paid. One pot is the basic insurance, which is compulsory for everyone. The other pot is the supplementary insurance. The supplementary insurance can be optionally ended with the basic insurance.

The treatments paid from the basic package are at the expense of the deductible. The treatments that are reimbursed from the supplementary package do not require a deductible to be paid.

How expensive is a conservative course of physical therapy?

A conservative course, no anterior cruciate ligament surgery, is reimbursed from the supplementary package of your insurance. If you do not have a supplementary package or if you need more treatments than are included in your supplementary package, the extra treatments are at your own expense.

What does preoperative physical therapy cost?

Een preoperatief traject fysiotherapie wordt vergoed vanuit het aanvullende pakket. Heb je geen aanvullend pakket of heb je meer behandelingen nodig dan in je aanvullende pakket zitten, dan zijn de extra behandelen voor eigen rekening. Belangrijk: de behandelingen voor de operatie tellen niet mee bij de 20 behandelingen die nodig zijn voor na de operatie (hierover later meer).

What does anterior cruciate ligament rehabilitation cost after surgery?

An anterior cruciate ligament rehabilitation after surgery falls under the chronic code. A chronic code starts on the day of surgery and is valid for 1 year. During the year you are entitled to medically necessary physical therapy. The system in the Netherlands is set up so that the first 20 treatments are required to make the course chronic. From the 21st treatment you are insured under the basic package. A referral from the orthopedic surgeon is necessary.

The first 20 treatments come out of your supplementary package. If you have less than 20 treatments in your supplementary package, you pay the difference yourself. An example: if you have supplementary insurance for 9 treatments, you pay 11 treatments yourself. If you have no supplementary insurance, you pay 20 treatments yourself. One physical therapy treatment costs about 25-40 euros. Again, treatments before surgery do not count towards the 20 treatments after surgery.

The basic package

A physiotherapy treatment from the supplementary package will not be at the expense of your deductible. Physiotherapy treatments from the basic package do come at the expense of the deductible. The deductible runs per calendar year. This means that after January 1, you always have to pay the deductible again. If you are still in the chronic phase of your cruciate ligament rehabilitation on January 1, the first treatments will be covered by the deductible.

Medische zorg om te herstellen na een voorste kruisnamd blessure is duur en kostbaar. Daar bovenop komen vaak nog verschillende extra kosten. Het is belangrijk om uit te zoeken hoeveel behandelingen je hebt in je aanvullende pakket en hoe hoog het eigen risico is. Op deze manier kan je redelijk inschatten wat de kosten voor jou zullen zijn. Toch zijn er mogelijkheden om geld te besparen. In plaats van krukken of hometrainer kopen kan je deze lenen of huren, maar overleg ook met je fysiotherapeut over de mogelijkheden om  te besparen.
